2 Kings 11-16

Overview of chapters 11-16

Point: Patterns of sin are only ever curtailed by intervening grace and patterns of righteousness are only ever maintained by sustaining grace.

1. Grace Preserving a King for God’s Covenant People (11:1-21)
a) Joash Protected (11:1-3)
b) Joash Proclaimed (11:4-16)
b) Jehoiada’s Proposal (11:17-20)
Main Point - It is the grace of God alone that preserves his people and through them accomplishes his divine purposes.

2. Grace Continuing in the Life of God’s Covenant People (12:1-16)
Point - The ongoing problems of sin do not diminish but rather enhance the grace of God.

3. A Disturbing Epilogue (2 Chronicles 24:17-22)
Point - The need for spiritual vigilance lest we get drawn into idolatry and forsake the God who bought us.

4. Application - Grace in Sustaining God’s New Covenant People (Titus 2:11-15)
"Grace is not simply leniency when we have sinned. Grace is the enabling gift of God not to sin. Grace is power, not just pardon". — John Piper
